SONNET

ON THE CROWNING OF HER MAJESTY, QUEEN ELIZABETH II

For this immortal moment, there has been
Relived, long centuries of pageantry:
And now, enthroned, Elizabeth, our Queen,
Radiant, proud, with regal piety,
Receives the symbols of her high estates;
The Spurs, the Orb, the Ring, and, at her waist,
The jewelled Sword of Justice: Silence waits:
St. Edward's Crown is reverently placed:
The hushed and solemn, supreme moment falls,
And voices, loud in acclamation, hurled
About the old enshadowed Abbey walls,
Resound through England and a waiting world,
"God Save the Queen", and each a homage pays
In humble dedication, pride and praise.

[Her coronation took place on 2nd June 1953. I'm told (I have no actual recollection) that we watched her coronation live on TV, our little black & white goggle box. We were the first in our street to have one, so neighbours joined us to watch 'history' being made. My Dad commemorated the occasion with a patriotic Sonnet, here.]
