but the vicar contradicted
citing chapter & verse
& under his breath
he mumbled a curse

damn you for your intrusion
just as I was reaching my conclusion
then he yelled at the angel
the congregation replied AMEN
& feeling so blest & pure & holy
filed out the church demurely & slowly
they looked good in sunday-best
as they went away to their day of rest
come monday morning sin again
